Leadership through Safety (LTS) Program

In pharmaceutical environments, safety is a universal and critical concern.

Environmental health and safety is a language spoken everywhere, every day. Schering-Plough (S-P), the worldwide pharmaceutical giant now part of Merck, knew that making its facilities safer was a win-win situation — for its colleagues and for its productivity. S-P regularly conducted team-oriented seminars and workshops, under the banner of LEADERSHIP Through SAFETY (LTS).

The objective of this comprehensive program was to not only reinforce the practice of safety among S-P colleagues, but also change the way employees think about safety on a daily basis.

KSA&D produced a series of booklets, for presenters and team members, which present LTS in an attractive, easy-to-use format. Complemented by a PowerPoint presentation, the booklets contain interactive lessons and activities for a variety of safety subjects, for any possible situation at any S-P facility around the world. Because safety was critical across all continents and countries, KSA&D also translated these publications into eight different languages.

The real success of LTS has transcended significant safety performance improvements. LTS has been shown to motivate everyone from the executive office to the shop floor to move beyond compliance and to not accept “good enough” when it comes to their own safety or the safety of others. Recognizing this effectiveness, Merck has adopted the LTS initiative and continues to rely on KSA&D to update and expand the program components.
